For me, this is the volume where the story starts to take off. I enjoyed the last 3 volumes, but after this volume the series becomes less episodic and there starts to be more of an overarching plot. I mean, it's still fairly episodic, but less so than before. Also, the friendship between the club really starts to be seen after this volume. Their friendship is what makes the series for me, so any episode that focuses on their relationship is a win for me.

. Part of me hates it because it's so cheesy, but the other part of me loves it...because it's so cheesy. It's loads of fun, but it is a bit too melodramatic, so I'm glad that we only get short snippets of it in different volumes.

Well, that was really weird. But still super funny!

Probably the volume that has made me laugh the most so far, that Alice retelling was everything! I just couldnt stop laughing, and whenever they broke the fourth wall, lol I wish I had that sense of humor. Also, oh my god my love for everyone has grown up, specially for Mori and Hunny, I just love their bond so much, they always care for each other and the episode where Hunny got a cavity is such a good example of that. I WANT MORE! Thank godness Im only on volume 4

    More like 4.5

This time I couldn't give my relevant updates (I'm sick af) but in general:

    -haruhi's dad is best dad

-it swifts between the anime and the live-action but still there's content that hasn't been adapted

-that thing of passing the roll of alice was great

-the journalism club plot is always great

    4.5/5

Amazing as usual! The Alice in Wonderland parody chapter is actually different to the anime episode so that was interesting, can't wait to read the next volume! :D

The Alice in Wonderland episode... omg... yes! It was so good! So, so good!!

Also, Haruhi's father FOR THE MOTHER F*CKIN' WIN!!

Hahaha-- the synopsis for this volume is just the summary of the final episode in volume 3! Merely setting the stage for Tamaki's continued embarrassment. Again.

Episode 13 begins right where 12 left off: With Tamaki in a compromising position with Haruhi as her father returns home. Antics, obviously, ensue. What I appreciate most about this episode is that we get to understand Haruhi's father (Who goes by Ranka - it's his professional name). He is a complex character - a bisexual who works at a cross-dressing bar, a doting father who struggles to connect with his independent daughter while wanting to protect her. It's obvious that he and Tamaki are shockingly similar.

Episode 14! Poor Hunny. He gets a toothache JUST in time for Valentine's Day. This whole episode is purely Mori and the Club preventing Hunny from eating sweets until he can get his cavity cared for. It's shockingly adorable and I laughed at all the way Hunny tried to convince people to let him eat cake. XD I also appreciate the Samurai spirit Mori has - the poor man is beating himself up the whole episode because he blames his negligence on Hunny's cavity. Silly? Yes. I don't care. They're so cute.

Sigh. I could take or leave Episode 15. This Alice in Wonderland retelling is fun from the idea that the Host Club characters each take on different roles; particularly as they keep changing roles mid-episode. But overall? I just didn't care that much for it. Cute, fun, but overall meh.

Episode 16 introduces us to our first of the other school clubs: The Newspaper Club! About the be shut down due to poor circulation, the Newspaper Club requests to do a special issue on the Host Club thinking their popularity will keep the newspaper, and their club, afloat. Kyoya is opposed, but Tamaki won't let their peers suffer when they can be helping! As is not to be surprised, the Newspaper club hopes to expose the Host Club as the vagrants there are and smear the name of Tamaki in particular. The Host club boys leave Tamaki and Haruhi behind (Who get to know each other better in an adorable hide-and-seek scene) while they go and expose the plot. After all, we come the learn, Tamaki is the son of the Ouran High School chairman.

Finally, Volume 4 concludes with another Love Egoist episode. I won't lie, I strongly dislike these. This one in particular felt inappropriate and abusive on so many levels. I hope there aren't more of these in the future. O_o

While the overarching plot if slower moving, I feel like this reflects reality. Life isn't one consistently tethered story. I appreciate getting to know these characters one moment at a time.

This one wasn't my favorite. Something about this one seemed a bit off. That something was probably the whole Alice in Wonderland thing which just seemed a bit clumsy and convoluted. Also, I'm not sure how transgender language is handled in Japan, but in the US the word "tranny" is generally used as a derogatory name and I'm not sure how I feel about seeing it used to describe Haruhi's Dad. Although I will admit that It's quite possible that this is somewhat dated or that something got lost in translation or that the culture is different in other countries I'm willing to give it the benefit of the doubt. I did like the way the club defends their idiot president and his good intentions.
