Soo-won is definitely my favorite character in this series, despite the fact that he has killed Yona's father and betrayed her. He is not cold-blooded, he feels sad and guilty too, but he must leave all those emotions aside because the kingdom needs a greater king. The formal king, Yona's father, did not do a very good job on ruling the kingdom. He also hates Soo-wo, so Soo-won only choice is to kill Yona's father. That was Soo-won plan, to kill the king in peace, no one will know, but unluckily, Yona walked in right at that moment and saw everything. Soo-won was forced to kill her to keep the secret safe, but she has escaped. If Yona didn't witness that scene, she could have lived in peace.

For Soo-won, the hardest part was not to kill the king but to betray Yona. He loved his childhood friends dearly, Yona and Hak, but he also know that his kingdom is too corrupt and needs a change. Ever since he was young, he has had this vision, he knows what he need to do, he knows that it was his responsibility to make everything right again. However, to achieve that, he knows he must sacrifice a few things that are very important to him.

In this volume, we get to see a bit from Soo-won's perspective and it's so sad. He said that sometimes, the warmth he received from his childhood friends really make him reconsider his decisions. Like Yona and Hak, Soo-won wanted to remain this happy, fairy-tale like moments too, but Soo-won is not a selfish person. He doesn't want his own happiness, he wants the whole kingdom to be happy. There are people starving in his country every day and he wants to help them, being king is the only way to make a great influence.

And there he goes, Soo-won has arisen to the throne. He said to himself he has gone so far now, he has done the worst of the worst, the most painful thing ever by betraying his friends. He will never get those peaceful days with them ever again. That is why, nothing can stop him now, nothing is harder than betraying Yona and Hak anymore.

It is really hard to hate Soo-won, even though he is supposed to be the villain. Looking at his sad face, portrayed by Mizuho Kusanagi, that picture frame, there is no need for words to describe his emotions. That drawing has said everything. Sad, grieving for his friends, the worst part is that he, himself is the one who did the damage, but also determined to make the kingdom great again. Yona and Hak is not the only one who was hurt after this event, Soo-won is too. It's just, he is better at hiding and controlling his emotions. Soo-won was born king, he is a natural at this. He can convince any kind of person if he wanted to. Serious when needed, kind when needed, this guy can change his attitude in a blink of an eye. And Soo-won has a big big heart, a caring person after all. It's just, he has such big vision for anyone to understand.

I'm loving this manga so far. The character and story development is building up so nice and easy to follow. I love the Wind Tribe and love that they immediately took in Yona. The humor is amazing. I even like Su-won character and the mystery on what happen to him. And the angst between Hak and Yona, I'm living for it.

This story continues to develop in an unexpected way! It keeps me guessing, and I love it for that. Yona is growing and changing. I cant wait to see where she ends up!

This is a review of volumes 1-2 which I read together back to back. See the plot section for my thoughts on the individual volumes.

Princess Yona is the pampered daughter of her kingdom's king. Isolated and doted on she has two childhood friends, Hak, a general who also protects her and her cousin, Soo-won who helped her mourn her mother's passing and who she is crushing on big time. On her 16th birthday her entire world implodes to to a crippling betrayal... She must decide if she will fall in line or rise up and take back her kingdom.

This is one of those premises where its not the heroine that is going to draw you in at first, because she's the one doing the changing. I thought the setup of this idea was quite good. You knew who you were rooting for HAK! He's the hero right now and basically I hung in there because this was recommended to me as having dragons! In fact, I thought Yona as she is, spoiled and delusional though she may be, has promise. She knew she couldn't go along with her feelings even though she still felt them. And by the end of volume two she had determined to start acting more in line with what she wanted to become.

Soo-won is quite depthful for such a one note heroine. Yona, of course, will grow and as she gets into situations we will witness her depth, as we should. We start out though with quite the villain and I was happy for it... In particular I am curious about Soo-won and Hak's history which we explore some over these 2 volumes. This isn't a simple deceptive, snake like villain whose been lying in the grass. No this is turning his back on something real and something that he felt too! This relationship to our two protagonists added a lovely tension that kept me flying through the pages.

The art isn't my favorite. I favor the modern updated version of the big-eyed characters... but I found that this style suits the story. It has this old fashioned fantasy feel that adds rather than detracts. Plus it also has clean lines and uses a lot of the framing techniques that I love and when used well showcases the story so well. It totally won me over.

So with my rating at this point I rated volume 1 as a 3 star and volume 2 as a 4 star as the story has tons of promise so the average is 3.5 stars and I just rounded up because I have a good feeling about this series. Yes, we had your typical betrayal to steal a kingdom from a naive and spoiled princess... but we also have this lovely world that we get to explore and learn more about... which is a good thing for a princess to do, get to know her people! And we also got to see Yona in action... she isn't going to take this lying down... I look forward to more adventures were she really comes into her own.

The first volume of Yona of the Dawn left me wondering, "why, why hadn't I read it sooner?" It felt classic, with a villainous twist, action, and set-up for an on-the-run-adventure.

This one not so much. The princess' guard and protector, Hak, it felt like, he did a 180. Instead of vowing to protect her out of loyalty to her and her father, he suddenly started with the sexual harassment and wanting payment with her body....Um, I don't mind witty, flirty, back-and-forth banter. In fact I love it when I'm shipping two characters. But, Princess Yona didn't have any strong comebacks. She was just kinda there.

I already own Vol. 3, so I guess I'll read the next one and see if the story improves.
