This volume was about Karasuno and their past. They recently got beaten a few months ago by a really strong team, but they have developed, played practice matches and came back stronger. This is them proving that they have changed. They're no long flightless crows!

Yamaguchi is going to learn the jump float serve because he wants to be on the court and help the team yessss! They have the banner and woo everyone is all fired up for the first match.

All the Kagehina racing and Hinata saying he will stand on the same stage as him even if it take 10 years :’) My boys have come so far!

Tanaka and Noya protecting Kiyoko ahh. Daichi not giving up in junior high no matter the opponent just shows why he’s such a great captain.Ooh Aoba Jousai are watching they’re clearly going to see all of Karaunos’ new tricks smart.

I think the other team thought it was nice Karauno were taking the game seriously even though it was a starting match. It was cool how Karasuno got upset about losing a point and stood tall determined to take it back. Real fighters. Karasuno won woo!

Karasuno vs Daketo. I love Noya just blasting in with his rolling thunder to chill the atmosphere, he’s got everyone’s back. Karasuno are getting blocked a lot but the main factor was they weren’t giving up or getting defeated.

“Jump will all your power, at your top speed and I will get the ball to you.” Ah Kageyama is so determined and Hinata trusts in him so much it’s lovely. It’s really clever how they’re playing it. Hinata is the only one who can do the oddball quick, but with all eyes on Hinata not knowing what he will do that leaves from for Tanaka and Asahi to spike.

When the chapter is called The Strongest Decoy you know it’s going to be good! Hinata cleared the path for Asahi ahhh :’) so proud. Asahi beat the iron wall and saw the other side because of team work!

Let's break it down.

was short but insightful matchup. Even though the Tokonami kids are pretty sure they are going to lose, they still give it their best shot. And much like Kageyama treated Hinata like a real opponent the year before despite the rest of his team thinking it was an easy win, we see Karasuno treat the Tokonami team exactly the same. They don't know for sure it's going to be a solid win, so they treat it seriously until the very end.

is where things begin to get really interesting! Date Tech is a formidable opponent and their blockers are really top notch. Which earned the the notable nickname of the IRON WALL, because almost nothing gets passed them. Too bad for them, they've never quite faced someone with the moves Kageyama and Hinata through out. The quick and Super Quick are throwing Date Tech off, and their Read Blocking is useless against the Super Quick, but that doesn't mean that Karasuno is heading toward victory. Date Tech is always right on their heels, even pulling ahead in a couple places. It is certainly a nailbiter of a matchup.

is easily the most intimidating of the Date Tech kids. Extremely tall, he hones in on Hinata like a fly to rotten fruit. His height gives him advantage in that he doesn't have to jump as high, which sometimes lets him jump twice to stop a ball just in case the spiker somehow manages a way passed a block.

I loved the quick back and fourth between the Girls' match and Karasuno's match. It was great to see how that while one team can shine another can crash and burn no matter how hard they try. And it really hits home the fact that not all kids leave their schools as winners. As sad a fact as that is to accept.

This was the best volume of Haikyū yet! I loved seeing people and other teams react to Hinata ( it never gets old), and I loved all the background commentary from coaches, former players and viewers of the match. 5 stars out of 5!

I love this manga, the simple story really gives the characters a chance to shine.

Volume 5 is mostly a transition from the pick-up game against Nekoma to the Inter-high preliminaries.

Karasuno trains really hard for the tournament, so they can meet Nekoma in the finals. Also, the chapters heat up the suspence for the upcoming battle. We are also introduced to other top-teams looking to make a splash: Wakutani South, Iron Wall, Blue Castle, Swans. However, Karasuno must beat their next opponent before worrying about others.

We are also introduced to other top-teams looking to make a splash: Wakutani South, Iron Wall, Blue Castle, Swans. However, Karasuno must beat their next opponent before worrying about others.

Karasuno's first opponent, Tokonami, is a "cupcake" school with an old friend of Sawamura. The difference between both these schools is the sheer belief in themselves, coach, manager, president, and Karasuno. We truly notice they are the special team after their victory against Tokonami. Karasuno's belief and dedication to getting better is what sets them apart from Tokonami. They built a team that is rough around the edges, but will attack like a fine spear. (Thanks Izumida, Yowamushi Pedal

    , for the metaphor).

Karasuno's round 2 opponent is Date Tech, one of the scouted schools. They are known for the extreme defensive Iron Wall that sends shivers down opponent's spines. How will Karasuno's reliance on overpowering offense fair against an Iron Wall?

    ~Notes~

    >I have a good feeling about Aone. He is a different supporting character. Aone is very intimidating, yet he is calm and collected. He is similar to Noya, but more quiet. These traits make him an easily remembered character (not just for the missing eyebrows). I really like this character.

    >Hinata's Nicknames: Onion Head (Player on Blue Castle); Mr. Missing Eyebrows (Aone).

    >Karasuno has a girl's volleyball club. They are competing in the same Inter-high preliminaries.

The inter-high qualifiers have begun! After a frenzy of last minute training, Karasuno is determined to to have a rematch with Nekoma by winning the upcoming tournament. They draw Tokonomi for the first round, and the heat is on! Can they survive to make it to the next round of competition?

Sadly, there will be spoilers. Sorry! The game against Tokonomi takes up about a third of this volume, and it was a fun match! Everyone is down on poor Karasuno because they have been such non-starters

Sadly, there will be spoilers. Sorry! The game against Tokonomi takes up about a third of this volume, and it was a fun match! Everyone is down on poor Karasuno because they have been such non-starters for the last few years, calling them the Fallen Champions and the Clipped-wing Crows. Since a few of the team members are still struggling with confidence issues, this doesn’t help their frame of mind. Hinata and Kageyama rally behind the troops, so to speak, and push everyone to be the best they can be. Tokonomi is swiftly defeated, while some of the weapons that Hinata and Kageyama brandish are revealed to some of the other players watching the match.

The second bracket is against Date Tech, a team of monsters. The guys on Date Tech are huge! They make Hinata look like a little mouse. A fast, sneaky mouse, but a mouse none the less. This is a no holds barred slug fest. Both teams flex their strengths, and try to hide their weaknesses. Hinata and Kageyama’s quick set has Date Tech absolutely lose their minds! What a fun match up! Unfortunately, the book ends during the middle of the game, prompting me to hop up on a lazy Sunday afternoon and run, RUN, up to the library to check out every volume of the series that they had on the shelf (which, yes, included #6, but NOT #7). So make sure you have the next volume on hand if you are enjoying this series at all, because you are going to want it read it right away!

The art is impressive, with dramatic panels of leaping, intense players. Hinata at one point even looks like he is flying as he smashes one of the Kageyama’s sets. And the decoy sequence was worthy of a cheer. While I am still not a volleyball fan, I am a big fan of this series.

I think that this volume is one of the climaxes of the first hero's cycle. "Asahi" and "Nishinoya" get over a trauma by a match with "Date Kougyou". The animation of this match is really exciting than the manga. If you never to watch it you should do that!!

This tankōbon opens with the mention of the Interhigh Tournament – a national tournament for High School Volleyball teams. However, before they could represent Miyagi Prefecture in the Nationals, Karasuno High School had to become the representative of Miyagi Prefecture first. Therefore, they practiced hard for their first match in the tournament – Tokonami High School.

Tokonami High School went into the tournament rather lackadaisical, because they heard of the poor reputation of Karasuno High School. Hayato Ikejiri, a third year wing spiker in the Tokonami High School Volleyball Club and went to the same Junior High School as Daichi Sawamura – the captain and wing spiker of Karasuno High School. Predictably, they lose in two straight sets against the once flightless Karasuno High School with a score: 25|1|12 and 25|2|14.

In the second round, Karasuno High School plays Datekougyou High – a team that specializes in blocking and earning the nickname of the "Iron Wall". It was playing against Datekougyou High that Asahi Azumane lost his confidence and quit the volleyball team. This time around, Karasuno High played a smarter game. Since Datekougyou High thought that Shōyō Hinata was the new ace on the team and so Karasuno High played as such, until they revealed that Shōyō Hinata was a decoy – perhaps the best decoy ever. The tankōbon ends in the middle of the first set with a score of 19|1|15 in Karasuno's favor – a slim lead.

Haruichi Furudate has written and illustrated this tankōbon. For the most part, I really liked the story. It took thirty-five chapters, but Karasuno High School finally gets to play in a tournament. There is an absorbent amount of characters and teams introduced in this tankōbon and it is a tad difficult to keep track, but the tournament itself was a joy to read.

    All in all,

is a wonderful continuation to a new series that seems really intriguing and I can't wait to read more.

I really like this series but I admit to be disappointed when the Karasuno's girl volleyball team lost so easily. Especially since, when the female captain was introduced in the anime, I had misunderstood one of her lines and thought that the girl's team was still a strong team even though the boy's team had lost their ranking in the beginning.
