I didn't actually "read" the cookbook. I did peruse it and try out a few recipes.

This is the third (that I know of) in a line of slow cooker recipe books from America's Test Kitchen. The first volume was a general slow cooker recipe collection. The second focused on simplifying the preparation steps and time. This third volume focuses on the "healthy" aspect, but incorporates the easy-prep in many of its recipes. The cook can quickly see which ones a easy prep by looking at the colored page edge (gold) easily visible without opening the book.

A brand new feature is the highlighting and inclusion of

vegetarian recipes. This too, is highlighted on the page edges with another color (green).

As with all cookbooks and magazines from the ATK family, this cookbook not only provides the recipes, but summary background information on how the recipes were developed, numerous sections on general cooking techniques and tips, and an excellent index. If you know anything about ATK, you know that the recipes are hyper-tested and are written so that is is almost fool-proof.

If you are a slow cooker fan this is for you. If you're new to slow cookers, this is

a volume you will want to keep handy. If you are vegetarian, this looks like one that can come in quite handy.

I went shopping hungry. Instead of loading my cart with food, this fell into my cart. I have a slow cooker I've been meaning to put to greater use. Most of the recipes are not my usual fair, and my cupboards are not currently stocked with the right ingredients. The pictures look awesome... On the plus side, I don't have a house full of food I bought while hungry. On the down side, I can't eat pictures. Looking forward to trying out a few of the soups and pulled meat meals.

Update: The Easy Chicken Noodle Soup on page 60 is indeed easy and delicious.

This is a great cookbook - it's everything I look for in a cookbook for regular use. It's slow cooker, lighter meals. They cover everything from mains to deserts and soups. The ingredients are easy to get, the steps clearly broken down, and there's s pretty broad selection of dishes. And they provide full nutrition information!

Love the America's Test Kitchen series. Each recipe has a "Why this recipe works," plus they evaluate the slow cookers themselves. A great selection of recipes, with lots of shopping, prepping, cooking and serving tips. Learned a lot, and I'm not new to slow cookers!

I can’t believe I have never reviewed this cookbook as it is one of my favorites. I have been an American’s Test Kitchen followers for years and I can’t tell you how many of their recipes I have made over the years. I also subscribe to both the Cooks Country Magazine and Cooks Illustrated Magazine; they both offer recipes yet they each are different in their own unique way (check out their website site). If you could see my copy of the book, you could see how much I use this cookbook by the post

If you could see my copy of the book, you could see how much I use this cookbook by the post-its at the top, and I do write in this book. This is one of my go-to crock-pot cookbooks.

First, why I like American Test Kitchen. The variety of cookbooks they have is amazing! From vegan, cooking for two, diabetes, meat, brunch, pies, etc. (I’m sure you’ll find something in their stack for you). I like their cookbooks as they use normal ingredients that I have in my pantry or that I would find at my grocery store. I also feel that I am cooking something that’s normal, it’s not a dish that can only be served on special occasions. I like their recipes because they try these recipes over and over again until they are perfect. With each recipe, they include a description as to WHY the recipe works. It can include things they tried in the recipe, what they changed, what worked and what didn’t. I think that’s interesting.

With this cookbook, you will not get a picture with every recipe but you will get serving size and cooking time. Nutritional information is not available. There are 12 main food categories in this cookbook: soups, stews, braises, chilis, BBQ favorites and more, pasta sauces, meatballs meatloaves and more, enchiladas tacos and more, casseroles, on the side, eggs and brunch, and desserts. There’s also a basic section (broths, sauces, gravy, etc.), an index, and a slow cooker 101 section.

I have bought this cookbook as a wedding present many times, have bought it for friends and each of my kids have a copy as I think it’s fantastic. I have made the Farm Stand Tomato Sauce, the Chili Mac, Tomato Macaroni and Cheese, Meatballs and Marinara, Chicken, Tomato, and Olive Sauce, White Chicken Chili, Smothered Pork Chops with Onions and Bacon, Old Fashioned Beef and Noodle Soup, Tex-Mex Chicken Stew, Bachelor Beef Stew…….(I think I will stop).

I will comment that with their recipes, there is prep time. You might need to brown your pork chops before putting them in the crockpot or you might need to simmer/mix some ingredients before pouring it into your crockpot but this is worth it. If you short on time in the morning, I have done these steps the night before and stored the product in the retrig. Overnight and just continued with the recipe in the morning and the recipe turned out fine for me. I highly recommend this cookbook!

As with all America's Test Kitchen publications, this cookbook doesn't disappoint. Similar to its

I wasn't sure how many recipes I was going to benefit from, but I have so many post it notes in this volume that it looks like a paper explosion! My single criticism is simply a desire for more color photos of the finished product, although there are already a good number in here. It's just comforting to match your results to the Test Kitchen version in appearance for validation. :-)

All in all, a fabulous addition to my cookbook collection.

The recipes are great and there's a bunch of different types of food BUT please know that if you use the slow cooker for while you're at work OR with the intention of dumping a bunch of stuff together and being done with dinner THIS IS NOT FOR YOU. I don't think America's Test Kitchen really understands why America loves a slow cooker. The beauty of a slow cooker is you can put stuff in - go to work and have a yummy dinner almost ready when you return. Now my slow cooker has the "keep warm" feature so I can set a timer for 5-6 hours and it will just keep it warm until I return - but when pork loin recipes call for 1 hour of cook time, keeping it warm for 7 more hours seems like it won't work. Close to 3/4 of the recipes in this book are between 1-5 hours!! They sound like they'd be good- but unless you work from home, can run home on lunch to start it, or only use your slow cooker on your days off it really isn't very practical is it?? I can do many of these recipes in the same time on my stove or in my oven!

Meatballs Marinara in 4 hours, enchiladas in 1 hour, Spring polenta casserole in 3 hours, chipotle chicken chili in 2 hours??

All this being said, there are 10 recipes (out of 200) that I am going to try. I'm glad I got this from the library and didn't buy it.

I found like three recipes I may attempt at home.

When I look at recipes, I have certain criteria: does this look appetizing, do I have these ingredients in my home or local grocery store (not specialty store) and do I think these ingredients will work together?

So a handful of recipes out of an entire book? You be the judge...

or maybe I'm just a picky eater.
