Cowboys Don't Ride Unicorns

I was such a happy reader with Cowboys Don't Ride Unicorns. It started with Danny not only winning a bull-rider rodeo, but also saving another bull-rider's life. I was very happy to see Rand and Kai as well as the kids again, too. I met those characters in

, the first story in this amazing series. Danny was my kind of hero, because while he is tough on the outside, he is all lovely and sensitive on the inside. He wasn't afraid to show his affections, either, even if that would have been totally understandable due to something that had happened in his past.

Laurie was the sweetest guy ever, between his extravagant persona, pink hair and flimsy tops, and his dominant personality, he was more than a match for Danny! And Cowboys Don't Ride Unicorns showed me once again that we shouldn't assume. It also showed that sometimes, help can come from the least expected place or person, just as sometimes, an attack can come from a place or person that seemed or should have been safe...

I loved Danny and Laurie so much, and I wouldn't mind another story about them, a bit further down the road to see if they are able to build a life together. Written in third person point of view, mostly from Danny's perspective, and in past tense, the story flowed so very nicely. The pace was perfect, and I really felt like I was friends with this amazing cast of characters, with whom I'd go for a ride any day. There are some very humorous dialogues as well, and overall, the story was very well done.

But it wasn't a Yee-Haw ride all the way. The author galloped in with a nasty, bigotry side-story, showing the devastation that it leaves on people’s souls when it touches you (yep, it was tissue time). For me, it was about love and hope, fighting for what you want and being proud when you achieve it and I have to give full kudos to Tara Lain on the delivery of this.

Danny is a saddle tramp, he works on a Dude Ranch with a dream of someday owning his own Ranch. To make extra money, he’s a Bull Rider. Not the big leagues – he done that in the past with devastating consequences, so now it's the smaller Rodeo with less money, but where his real identity is unknown.

Laurie in the other hand, has no problem with people knowing his identity, in fact he encourages it. He’s flamboyant, certainly doesn't hide his sexuality and knows what he wants - especially with his mother directing him in the course to go and with whom. But he too has secrets….

I'm a real sucker for insta-love, throw in a well written femme MC (which the author did so amazingly well) and I'm in Cowboy Heaven, I certainly reached the stars with this one. I loved it. Now I admit that at first, I didn’t quite get the title? Now I do! and have to say that it is perfect for this book – read the book to find out why……

Though Book 2 of this Series, it can be read very successfully as a stand alone and I highly, highly recommend that you do, because Tara Lain took an illusion and made it real for Danny Boone, let her make it real for you too.

I haven't read the previous book in this series, so it's safe to say that this one can be read as a stand alone. I usually don't read a lot of books that have a femme/flamboyant hero, because I am much more into the whole big bad alpha thing. What I do love however, are cowboys...they are my kryptonite. I was gonna go with 3,5 stars for this book, but I rounded up because well...like I said....cowboys !!!

Danny is a ranch hand at a dude ranch, which is owned by Rand (book 1). He used to be a famous bull-rider in the past, but his dad put a stop to that, in a very cruel way. Danny changed his name and even though, he still rides on rodeo's from time to time, to make some money, he tries to stay as far away from his past as he can.

Danny also has a very specific preference, when it comes to his romance/sex life. He loves flamboyant men, but he loves it even more, when they top him. Finding such a mystical unicorn isn't very easy though.

Until one day, such a rare unicorn walks into the ranch as a guest.... Danny feels an immediate attraction towards the flamboyant man. There is only one problem. Laurie didn't come alone, he is with his boyfriend. His very rich boyfriend.

While Danny is trying to outrun his past, Laurie is struggeling with his future. He wants to do right by his parents and he knows his boyfriend could be a big help, but shouldn't his feelings matter. He knows Grove is not the man for him. What he really wants is a go at that cowboy.

Luckily for both of them, he gets that chance ....

But what will happen when Danny is confronted with his past and Laurie's future gets in the way....

This book was heavy on the insta-love, I would have liked it more if the two of them would have gotten to know each other a bit better. I also would have liked to read more about Danny and his father. The situation between them was quite volatile and it was fixed a bit too fast and easy for my taste. Still ..it was a very nice read, even though my preference for alpha men has not changed.

In the end, I am happy that Danny found his unicorn....

He occasionally rides the second string rodeos to win the money to put towards that dream, even as he has to be extraordinarily careful that no one recognizes him or knows his real name.

Danny is a down to earth man. He knows what he wants and how difficult it will be to get it. What he wants walks into the ranch as a guest and takes Danny’s breath away. Namely, Laurie. Laurie is there with his boyfriend, Grove, a rich lawyer who wants to show Laurie how very manly he is. Except despite Grove’s attitude, it becomes apparent Laurie is all man and holds his own. He is the unicorn that Danny has been looking for – the gorgeous, femme, dominant top who wants more than anything to be able to live his own life.

While Danny has a past he needs to put behind him, Laurie has a present that needs to be fixed. He’s staying in a relationship that doesn’t make him happy, in a job where he is stifled and turning over all his savings to his domineering mother, who treats Laurie as though his beauty is the only thing he has going on. This is where Danny fills the hole in Laurie’s heart – Danny treats Laurie as a valuable person, not just a beautiful one.

The problem for these two is mostly distance, both geographical and status. Laurie is a city boy, a talented designer, while Danny is a definite country boy on the ranch. How do they make it work? Particularly when there are so many things pulling at each one of them.

While there is a lot going on in this story, it didn’t feel crowded or rushed. The plot remained clearly focused on the dance between Laurie and Danny and how difficult circumstances can be no matter how much you want to be with someone.

For the seriousness of the issue of Danny’s father, I would have liked to see a bit more of what was going on. It is resolved, in a way, but it seemed a little too easy for what had been happening. Laurie, however, did not disappoint.

I liked this one better than the previous book with Rand and Kai.

Danny and Laurie were definitely made for each other.

Lawrence a.k.a Laurie is a flamboyant and beautiful man, with a great sense of fashion, rich boyfriend and a city guy.

Not compatible with Danny the bull rider at all.

But don't ever under estimate Laurie. He's probably looked like a girl, but he can make a bull rider fall on his feet. Literally! And he can fight man! What a guy!

I liked the chemistry between Danny and Laurie from the start, even some point, I doubted his fidelity to his rich lawyer boyfriend. But I knew something's coming so...I waited.

And yeah, as predictable the case with the boyfriend is, I think Laurie made a point why he's 'not comfortable with his boyfriend.

Not everybody liked it when your whole life you have to do things for everybody and makes everybody happy and being a trophy boyfriend.

At some point, Laurie had to make a decision how would he live his life the way he wanted.

And Danny is in the picture.

    Enjoy the ride!

This story was a far better improvement on the first book in this series. The MCs here had quite sizzling chemistry while also being in a very complicated situation to actually work out. Well, what is a romance if it does not have a little angst and whole lotta anticipation*winks*

is a ranch hand in Rand’s dude ranch in California. Danny also rides bulls on the side occasionally just to fatten his bank account a little bit to fulfill his dreams to get an education and owning a place of his own. He keeps away from professional bull riding circuits coz he has a past he badly wants to stay away from.

Danny is not upfront about his sexuality to everybody but he never actually hides it if asked. He has casual acquaintances for hooking up but they never come close to what he actually wants. You see, Danny has a very specific taste in men. He likes effeminate, flamboyant men who although being in short order in the land of cowboys are not rare but a twink who loves to top and dominate a brawny cowboy, is as rare as a

. And therein lays Danny’s dilemma.

    Until,

enters his life as a guest in the ranch. Laurie is just too pretty for a guy and exactly what the doctor ordered for Danny. But Laurie comes attached with a very rich boyfriend so even though their attraction towards each other sizzles and burns everytime they are in each other’s vicinity; there is nothing they could do other than fantasize and exercise restraint in not crossing the line. It’s easier said than done.

Laurie’s life is no walk in the park as it seems. His family especially his mother is an insensitive, controlling and manipulative bitch who relies on Laurie’s relationship with his rich lawyer boyfriend to get what she wants. So Laurie is stretched between his love for his family and his desires to make choices on his own terms. On top of that, his asshole boss is making his job - in which he is absolutely brilliant at - more and more difficult. Laurie’s life is mostly a mess and bringing Danny in the equation like he wants will rock the already precarious boat he calls his life.

So, yeah you can guess that there are lots of roadblocks present in Danny and Laurie’s journey to their HEA. What I liked was that there was no cheating, coz it absolutely disgusts me. Laurie and Danny get together when things are already over between Laurie and his BF for which I am grateful to the author. They made an unusual pair with completely different backgrounds and expectations from life and it was hard to believe that they would actually work but after a lot of struggles and realizations, the couple made it work. There are compromises from both sides and I loved how it all culminates in a sweet and beautiful HEA for our cowboy and his precious unicorn.

The ball gets rolling as Laurie finally ditches his BF and stands up to his mother and breaks away from his asshole employer. I loved his strength and determination to make it on his own and stop letting other people rule his life. Danny and Laurie’s chemistry exploded after that. Their situation was still shifty but it all worked out finally.

Danny’s past was another major element in this story. His past as well as the violent act that led him to flee his previous life is hinted at from the start. As the story flows all our questions are answered. It painted quite a gruesome picture which made me rage and wanting to beat Danny’s evil dad black and blue. It was resolved a little quickly IMO but it gives closure to his past life as well as garnered him support from the bull riding community and from Danny’s pseudo family in the ranch.

Loved the audio on this one - at first it felt a bit exaggerated but quickly I grew to love it. The story was enjoyable and flowed really well - the secondary characters really made this one come alive. The contrast in the Two MC's really played well here - and dealing with another "sport" that is homophobic brought tragedy and triumph. This reminded me a bit of a favorite MM series of mine about bull riders/cowboys.

You might think from Laurie's description that he's an over-the-top flamboyant type, but really he's not. Yes, he may sport the accoutrements like the makeup and the lacy nightwear and such, but he honestly doesn't flaunt it. I liked Laurie, though I did think he went way too long letting others run his life, trying to make everyone else happy.

I'm a huge fan of Danny, hot cowboy with a hard, damaged, mostly hidden past. I admired his determination, and the respect he showed others. I

I'm a huge fan of Danny, hot cowboy with a hard, damaged, mostly hidden past. I admired his determination, and the respect he showed others. I liked the matchup of him and Laurie, though getting the two of them together was sometimes an exercise in frustration, and honestly I didn't feel an emotional connection between them.

I will admit, I thought this book didn't flow quite as well as the first book in the series did, and at times this one did feel unfocused. I was also not at all a fan of Laurie's actions with Danny while Laurie was still with Grove. These things were mostly balanced out for me by Danny's story involving someone from his past and how that all played out.

I think the first book spoiled me a bit with Kai and Rand's story (I was very happy to see them both again in this book!), making it hard for Danny and Laurie's story to compare, but in the end I was pleased with how things worked out.

Recommended for M/M romance fans who are 18+ only due to adult language and explicit M/M sexual content.

DNF @ 40% -- This should have come with a cheater alert. Granted, it's about as small a cheating incident as it can possibly be, and Laurie's boyfriend (if my conjecture about him is correct) is a real piece of shit, but that doesn't excuse what happened. I continued for another chapter, but I couldn't get the yuck-factor out of my head. It's too bad because I was really enjoying the way the story was being set up, particularly the dynamic of stereotype-twisting sexual preferences of Danny and Laurie. I also was interested in Danny's backstory. If I ever do pick this book back up, it would only be to find out what the rest of that story is, but I won't be able to be convinced about whatever ends up happening from the romantic standpoint because this breaks the one rule I have when it comes to romance.

    Cheating = #NotARomance. Period.
