I made the mistake of peeking, which spoiled this issue's surprise. Oh man, if I had read it blind it would have blown me away. Take a walk around the block, kind of shock. Still, reading with what I knew, it remained brilliant.

I love Coipel's art. I would look at panels again, turn back and peek again at expressions, take my time on the pacing. He's amaze-balls. And my previous concern that this story can just do anything and get away with anything because MAGIC is no longer a concern. The plot

And my previous concern that this story can just do anything and get away with anything because MAGIC is no longer a concern. The plot is now in place and I can see the structures of the story now, no longer under threat of being random pretty scenes. (And random pretty scenes are fine and entertaining, but this has a lot more substance WHILE being pretty, so...I know what I prefer).

Also, can't wait until the next issue. So, yes. YES to THIS.

I need to know what happens next

    Damn! That was unexpected!

I think I’ve said this every issue, but man was this an intense read! At this point I’ve come to expect that from Magic Order, but that’s a good thing. It’s really great to have a heavy hitting and dark series about mages. It’s not something you see every day, after all.

This issue in particular felt rougher than normal though. There’s a major twist in it, so I’m going to be as vague as possible - you seriously do not want me spoiling this one. While I didn’t even remotely see it coming, I did

While I didn’t even remotely see it coming, I did get the sense that something was off. So in a way it’s nice to know that my gut was sort of right? It also means they did a fantastic job of throwing out some subtle hints, without giving anything away. That’s a really tough balance.

I’m mostly looking forward to the next issue, though I’ll admit I’m also a bit worried about it. There have been a lot of heavy hits in this series – though admittedly I haven’t had a chance to get attached to most of the characters that have been horribly affected so far. But now? Now I’m starting to get to know the surviving family members, and that scares me.

Mark Millar has this strange capability to surprise with the most evident things.

This chapter is another demonstration about how you really can use magic in a more original ways.

The car scene and the tricks with books like Robinson Crusoe or The Island of Dr. Moureau are great.

And, of course, a final surprise we never suspected with the classic Millar's style.

    Great issue!

I can't wait to see the TV series on Netflix!

    ¡Un número genial!

¡Qué ganas de ver la serie de TV para Netflix!

As with the first four issues, #5 has that cinematic appeal that makes The Magic Order an interesting Netflix show in the future. Scarce on exposition and world-building, it offers a sneak-peek of this world, although it would really help me to get super invested here if Millar did just explain what the Orihalcum's powers are or what really are the motivations of Madame Albany to take over the Order.

The penultimate issue still holds back on many vital story elements, but sets up the last issue (
