I’ve been hovering between ‘will I or won’t I?’ since I first saw this graphic novel listed on NetGalley. I loved the blurb but sports and I don’t mix so well, unless movie marathons or TV series hurdles somehow became Olympic events while I was busy binge watching.

I saw some early reviews of this Volume that told me I didn’t have to adore basketball to fall in love with this story so I finally decided to give it a go and, great news! Those reviewers were right! You don’t need to know anything

    This is Charlie.

She has recently transferred to Georgia O’Keeffe College of Arts and Subtle Dramatics and is not interested in playing basketball, not even after meeting the rest of the potential team: Liv,

    Ashley, Tiffany,

    Nicole, and Jay.

Liv is persistent though. She and the rest of the Avant-Guards wear Charlie down and she finally agrees to join the team, just in time for their first game.

This story has great diversity, with POC, LGBTQIAP+ and mental health all represented, which I appreciated. Although basketball brings the characters together, the focus is on friendship and having fun.

I loved Noah Hayes’ illustrations. They brought the personalities of each of the characters to life and drew me into the story. I don’t usually mention the colours used in graphic novels separately but I wanted to acknowledge Rebecca Nalty, who coloured this graphic novel, as it was the colours on this cover that initially caught my eye and made me want to read the blurb.

I really like the entire team and want to get to know them all better. While it was Liv’s enthusiasm that hooked me initially, the positivity, diversity and snippets of banter between the friends were what made me want to join their team. I’ll definitely be continuing to read this series. I’m even looking forward to the potential romance, despite being a fairly staunch romantiphobe.

Thank you so much to NetGalley and BOOM! Box, an imprint of BOOM! Studios, for the opportunity to read this graphic novel. I’m rounding up from 4.5 stars.

I had been eyeing this comic book for a while and I was so happy to get the chance to review the bind-up first volume in advance.

This was a very cute read. The artwork is very nice and I loved the palette of colors they used, it was such a nice choice.

The story is funny and cute. This basketball team is composed by a group of weirdos, as Charlie says, but they’re definitely a lovely group of weirdos who deeply care for each other and who support one another. The representation in this comic book is everything we deserve and more, I was so happy to see that.

My favourite parts were definitely the one where they all try to convince Charlie to join the Avant-Guards basketball team and also the one where they play against the team who had puppies at the game, they were adorable!

When it comes out I’m surely going to check out the second volume.

Charlie transfers to Georgia O'Keefe College of Arts and subtle Dramatics, where she is approached by a ragtag group of girls to join their new basketball team.

This was so much fun to read! I've been playing basketball for my entire life so I loved the focus on the team. The characters are amazing and I can't wait to learn more about them in future installments! I like that we actually got to know about each character and their unique personalities in their own panels! Charlie was a great main character, she was extremely moody and sarcastic and I loved every second of it. Liv, the team captain was adorably dorky. Ashley, the head coach was a lot of fun and I'm excited to see more of her joking personality in the future. Tiffany is a proud witch and I loved her so much. Nicole is the resident "bitch" of the team, but you know she is fiercely loyal to those she cares about. ALSO I LOVE THAT ONE IS NAMED JAY AND THEY LOVE PUPPIES BECAUSE HI THAT IS LITERALLY ME! The diversity in this was incredible. Each character had a different race, gender, body-type and style. There were different sexualities displayed and there was even inclusion of a non-binary character which I greatly appreciated! And puppies... there were puppies, so really... you can't go wrong.

I loved the art style and colours they chose for this and the panel layouts were also strategically and artistically done. At one point, the panels created a basketball and I really appreciated the effort that was obviously put into this.

I am beyond excited to see more from these characters!

I requested this without knowing anything about it because I adored Carly Usdin's

, and this was no exception.

Graphic novel reviews are difficult because there isn't much to say about them. However, this is an adorable, quick read that anyone could fly through in a couple of hours. I loved the characters and their separate storylines, especially Liv and her bubbly personality. The art was stunning and I adored the unique pages that deviated from the typical page layout. For example, there was a collage of the characters interacting in the shape of a basketball and a creative two-page layout montage of them practising that was cute. I don't care much for sports or any jargon relating to that, so they're the main things I wasn't sold on throughout the graphic novel.

Overall, I'd definitely revisit this in the future and I hope there are more volumes so we can further explore Liv and Georgia's relationship.

The story begins with Charlie Bravo, a former basketball star and transfer student at Georgia O’Keeffe College for Arts and Subtle Dramatics, as she tries to find her place in this new environment. During the student activities fair, she meets the Avant-Guards—the barely-formed basketball team lead by the charming Olivia “Liv” Bates—and is invited to join the team. Troubled by her experience with her former team, Charlie hesitates to accept the offer. However, Liv believes Charlie is the missing piece to complete the team—quite literally, they need one more member to be allowed to compete—and with the help of the rest of the members, successfully convinces her to join.

I had so much fun reading about these lovely characters and their shenanigans! They’re so relatable and hilarious. The story focuses on the friendship between the Avant-Guards and a budding romance between Charlie and Olivia, and it’s super sweet! I kept smiling from ear to ear the whole time! What I like best about the graphic novel is its casual diversity. As you can see on the cover, the main cast features mostly people of color. Among the main characters, there are sapphic, trans, and gender non-conforming characters. Their identity is a part of themselves, but it’s not the focus of their characterization and is introduced naturally throughout the story.

In addition to Carly Usdin’s captivating story, the art is absolutely stunning. Noah Hayes’ art style is the perfect choice for this comic. It’s clean and cartoonish, and it adds so much life and character to the story. Rebecca Nalty’s coloring is gorgeous as well. The vibrant colors give the comic such a fun and energetic vibe.

I would definitely recommend it to everyone. If you're looking for a quick, fun and

gay read, make sure to check this one out!

HELLO I'M LEA AND I HAVE FALLEN IN LOVE WITH A NEW GRAPHIC NOVEL SERIES!!!!

This is such a fantastic graphic novel, featuring

It's always so fun to me to see a group of people hanging out together and bonding over a thing that you would normally not really expect.

On top of all the good things, there is a f/f romance that is slooowly developing and I cannot wait to see where this goes in future installments.

I just loved this so very much and I'd highly recommend it for fans of graphic novels like GIANT DAYS and LUMBERJANES. I see

This was a nice comic about a newly formed and diverse basketball team with a cute developing f/f romance. I really like the art and it made the story easy and relaxing to follow. There's also not a lot of basketball talk and the focus is more on the characters and friendships, at least so far, which I personally really liked (confession: I kind of...don't like basketball

If I have the chance I'm going to check out the next volume whenever it comes out and if you like light-hearted queer comics that display a variety of genders, races and sexualities (and if you like sport comics) this is definitely something you need to check out!

If I was a tween girl, I'd probably love this. Alas I'm not, and this just seemed boring and pointless. It's about some girls in college who start a basketball team. That's the whole extent of the story, or lack thereof. It reminded me of a sports manga, but without any of the drama.
