'Just Like Beverly: A Biography of Beverly Cleary' by Vicki Conrad with illustrations by David Hohn is the true story of a beloved author.

Beverly Cleary grew up in a small town without many books. She had a group of friends and they liked playing outside. When she went to school, the books she read didn't interest her because they didn't seem to be about her and her friends. This is the story of how she came to write those kinds of stories.

I loved this inspiring story, and I especially loved the illustrations. They look like classic childrens book illustrations. I really liked this inspiring story about not finding what you are looking for, then setting out to make it.

As a child, Beverly Cleary’s books were a huge influence on me as I grew up wishing for a sister like Beezus and to have adventures like Ramona. When I saw that this book was the story of Cleary’s life (so far! She is 103 years old!) I was interested for nostalgia’s sake. What I didn’t expect was that the book would have such a wonderful message! The message that you can’t succeed if you never try is a universal message that we all need to hear. What I didn’t expect was that the book would have such a wonderful message! The message that you can’t succeed if you never try is a universal message that we all need to hear. The story is told in a simple manner making it a great introduction to her life, but what I also enjoyed was that a more straightforward biography is included as well as a timeline. These resources would make this an excellent choice for a student wishing do do a report on Beverly Cleary or for a class to study her as an author. I would also recommend this to anyone who has read the books or who is currently reading them as a way to understand her characters. Furthermore, I would recommend this book for almost any child who is struggling with reading/writing, has feared failure, or just needs some encouragement.

Thank you NetGalley for an early copy of this novel in exchange for an honest review.

This is the charming story of Beverly Cleary’s life. While growing up in Portland, Oregon, Beverly struggled to learn to read because the stories were so boring. With encouragement, first from several teachers throughout her life, and then from her husband, her writing blossomed. Beverly completed college and became a librarian where her dream to

Beverly completed college and became a librarian where her dream to write stories for children continued to grow. A timeline of important events in her life can be found in the back of the book.

What a gift Beverly has given to children. Her books are timeless. The stories are funny, interesting, and relevant to children still today. Who knows how many children have developed a love for reading through her work. Personally, my family listened to her book Emily’s Runaway Imagination on CD a decade and a half ago while driving a long distance for vacation. The stories have stuck with us all these years. Not only that, but my husband grew up in the same neighborhood as Beverly, five decades after her childhood. So we can literally and vividly picture the neighborhood Beverly mentions in her books.

This would be a lovely addition to any classroom or library. I highly recommend it.

Just Like Beverly is the beautifully written and illustrated story of Beverly Clearly.

As a little girl Beverly Clearly struggled to learn to read and found most children’s books uninteresting. She wondered why there weren’t more books with stories about kids like her. With a lot of hard work and the support of her parents and a special teacher who did not give up on her Beverly did learn to read, and even learned at a young age she had a gift for writing.

In this non fiction book Beverly Cleary’s life unfolds, and she grows to follow her dreams of writing the books she longed to read as a child. Showing how she would become an award winning writer and one of the most famous children's authors of all time.

I give Just Like Beverly five out of five stars!

    Happy Reading!

Writing so others can read it is an act of faith. It takes courage to shape something from nothing and then send it out into the world. In 1950 an author published her first of more than forty books. Today at 103 years old this woman's name is attached to titles of many of the most beloved books read by generations of readers. Just Like Beverly: A Biography of Beverly Cleary (Little Bigfoot, an imprint of Sasquatch Books, August 13, 2019) written by Vicki Conrad with illustrations by David Hohn allows readers to follow the life of this remarkable woman from childhood to her initial successes as an author.

This biography of Beverly Clearyt has layers and layers of content, useful for multiple purposes. The traditional approach to a picture book narrative biography works well, with charming illustrations and a an appealing retelling of the ways in which young Beverly was able to tap into her imagination from an early age. It also reveals her fun-lying and creative socializing, experimenting, and responses to opporuitnities.

Lighthearted humor in her own life reflects the light and delightful humor

The back matter is a surprise in that it nearly mirrors the main content, with fear pictures and a more small/dense/text format. Some new details were included, but it almost feels like an opportunity for a young reader to enjoy the picture book format several times and then make a stab at the more challenging text appearance with the support of familiar words and ideas from the main text. The timeline of her life is well done and accessible even tovevry young readers.

Hard to believe that Beverly Cleary, famous for Beezes and Ramona is over 100 years old. She is currently 103,to be precise. And her first book, Henry Huggins, was published in 1950. I well remember reading her books when I was in elementary school, and even back in the 1960s, they were of a time long ago.

Highly recommended as a good intro to this most famous author. Children who enjoy her stories will enjoy learning how she became the author that she is.

As an avid reader when I was little and still now, I am really excited about this book. Just Like Beverly by Vicki Conrad is a biography about Beverly Cleary, a popular children's book writer. 2,5/5. Little biography for children. I respect the person it presents but the book with its pace, its illustrations and the story, fine but nothing extraordinary in the life of this women, made this book loose some points. It wasn't bad, wasn't really good either!

This is an excellent book to share with a struggling reader.
