Lunar Maria Reviews
there is wonder here in this collection of poems that evoke for me Lydia Kwa's magnificent novel, Oracle Bone, set in 7th century China and centering girl as hero. These poems are populated with origin stories, old stories, suns and seas linking to love and enemies, lakes to forgetfulness and dreams, families and moons. it's a strong work.
This is a gorgeous, luminous chap: these poems have tenderness and have teeth. Who could ask for lines more lovely than "This then is the true immortality, this / is my last song to you, it begins with longing, and ends with love."? I loved Tan's blend of personal narrative with mythological history; she seamlessly connected the two and created such a rich experience. Worth reading again and again.
The recurring themes and images in this collection are relayed so beautifully with poignant and interesting language. There is a definite mood to these pieces and it’s almost elusive, but I think the author did such a good job of playing with the words and images to give the reader just enough to get a beautiful picture.
