I wish I was shown this concept as a child. A great simple tool that breaks away from the less create rigidity that a pattern of straight lines creates within ones mind and how the mind simply does not think in that nature most often. Recording thinking or making visual records of thinking or 'brain storming' is what this book covers. Great read from the industry leader and creator of the concept of "mind maps"

my rating is a 3.5 not a 4. As the title clearly says this book is on mind maps. mind maps are the natural way of connecting and associating things. inspired by the greeks the author clearly shows you what are mind maps , benefits of mind maps and how you can use mind maps in about everything. It is a quick read (100 pgs) but then again it could be distilled in ten pages with details and examples.

    SUMMARY:-

There are two things important to the brain when learning: association and imagination. Great thinkers like Leonardo Da Vinci used pictures, codes and connecting lines in their notes.Mind maps are the ultimate organizational thinking tool. Each mind map has a central image from which branches emanate relating to different things. They all use different colours, lines, symbols , words and images. Making a long list of boring information into a colourful, memorable , highly organized diagram according to your brain's natural way of working which is far easier and more reliable than traditional note-taking techniques.

    Making a Mind Map:-

Starting in the centre of a blank page use an image or picture of your central idea. Use different colors to make it exciting for the brain. Connect your main branches to the central image and connect your second and third level branches to the first and second levels there by associating. Make your branches curved rather than straight lined making it more attractive to your mind. Use one key word per line providing more power and flexibility to the mind like a multiplier of associations and connections. Use images throughout as it is worth a thousand words.

While I think that mind maps have some utility - packaging it as a comprehensive solution to all cognitive problems is a farce. Working memory is a real thing. I respect Buzan for his contribution to memory and note taking, but he should probably withhold himself from making unscientific claims (or quoting some ghost papers with no credibility). The examples covered in the book were good.

I had already read a good deal about mind maps, so the concept wasn't new to me. I read it because I have been "raised" with concept maps (ideas in bubbles, with verbs, or links between them, lookup CMAP for details) and I was wondering how Buzan treated complex subjects without those links. Actually, there aren't links. The mind map is supposed to flow "by itself", with the help of the colors and the pictures only.

I'm not sure I'm entirely convinced, but some examples, especially about scheduling, taking notes for phone calls, shopping, and life planning were pretty good.

Mind maps have the advantage over concept maps, computer-wise, that they easier to generate and that they can be easily converted to outlines. Actually, most of the comments Buzan makes on taking notes about the chronological aspect of taking notes in the "classical way" are pretty much wrong with the use of outlining software. Mind maps, on paper, do have the advantage of providing the "big picture" of the discussion, problem, or idea.

Anyway, a quick and cheap intro to mind maps, although it doesn't provide much more than what you can already find online.

is a tool that reflect the natural creativity and radiance of our thinking processes. And its a simple and very concise book, that teaches how to make mind maps.

A mind map is an organizational thinking tool, and is the easiest way to put information into your brain and to take information out of your brain. It's a creative and effective means of note-taking that literally maps out your thoughts. In a sense mind map is like a road map:

    * It gives you a overview of a large subject or area.

    * Enable you to plan routes or to make choices, and will let you know where you are going and where you have been.

    * Gather together large amounts of data in one place.

    * It helps you to concentrate, communicate, study, and remember much better.

Author has given 7 easy steps for how to make efficient mind maps. And then he goes on saying why mind mapping is much much better than taking linear notes. And its my personal opinion that at this time, when the world is overloaded with information, mind map will be the revolutionary substitute, to make learning more easier, natural, and enjoyable.
