This volume was amazing! Especially after the one with the Circus, the Baron and the creepiness... Or is it because I stopped reading the manga for so long? Anyway, this volume reminded me of

There are new characters, such as the Charles (whom, so far, I am indifferent to them), a beautiful opera singer, several rich men, and of course, the writer, who liked Ciel very much (It's just that Ciel is so cute!)

When Sebastian appeared dead... WOW, what a scene! He looked so handsome even with all that blood over him. And it was so nice to see Ciel so disturbed over Sebastian's death. He

care for Sebastian, this is a proof! I don't care what other people say, I'm sure they like each other, despite their contract.

I love the servants, who care so much for Ciel. And it was also nice to see Finny and Meyrin caring for Sebastian.

WOW, Sebastian's former boots and nails! Shocking! And also shocking... the cats in his closet! What a weird guy hahaha

I'm still not sure about Lau, though. If he is like in the anime or what. And Ran Mao is his sister! Another shock.

So THANK GOD Kuroshitsuji is not letting me down, after the terrible volume with the circus. It still amazes me the artwork in this manga, and it is so dark and funny at the same time.

Reread: WOW. I don’t even know what to think. This is just so fascinating!

Volume nine begins a new arc. Ciel is throwing a party for several dignitaries, not entirely of his own volition. Two sword-wielding men break in, challenge the staff then announce themselves as the “Double Charles,” secretaries and butlers to the queen, who, like me, was not pleased that Ciel had the kidnapped children killed last book. Georg von Siems is a German banker that her majesty wants entertained.

, Ciel has to throw the party and in attendance is a varied group, one of the Charleses, von Siems, an opera singer, Irene Diaz and her stage manager, Grimsby Keane, a diamond polisher, Karl Woodley, a shipping magnet, Patrick Phelps, recurring characters, Lau and Ran-Mao and oddly an out of place, not at all wealthy like the others oculist and wanna be author, Arthur (which takes about five seconds to peg him as one of my favorite authors, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle).

It is through Arthur’s eyes the whole story is told and the beginnings of Sherlock Holmes are stirred. In what would otherwise be a mundane scene, Lau (who like Arthur is being ignored by the rich beautiful people) tells him the night should be an amusing one. What makes it noteworthy is Lau’s eyes actually open (and that gets its own panel).

Before the night is out, one guest is done and it looks like Ciel is the only person who could have pulled off the crime. Arthur is set to watch the young earl but before the night is through more guests will fall and Ciel is without a butler.

The art is outstanding as always and I really liked this storyline. I’m looking forward to seeing what trap Ciel and Sebastian have laid out. Lau seems to know more than maybe he should. As she often does, Yana uses real historical figures in this alternative reality. Several of the above named characters were either real or based off real people. In spite of some of the oddly sexualized aspects (given Ciel’s age, they do not strike me as sexy), I really enjoy this manga.

The book of murder was one of my favorite arcs in the anime *-*

It was good but not as good as the others. There is a lot of mysterious things going on in this volume

Hi again, Black Butler. I'm not sure what kind of relationship this is. I mean, I'm committed to you. I do plan to read you until your writers decide to end it between us but you're just so meh at the moment. You had a few volumes that were fun and that made me want to read the next one immediately. The last few volumes... let's just not talk about them. I don't want to fight, you know, also, if I think about your last few volumes too much I will Zzz away because honestly:

boring. I liked volume 9 way better because of... a feel to it it had. I have to be honest with you, I only liked volume 9 so much more than the circus arc volumes because it was kind of Detective Conan-esque. I know, I know and I'm so sorry but I can't help it, this

saved our relationship, even though it feels like... I'm cheating? A little more truth: I'd choose Detective Conan over you any day. OK, I think I hurt our relationship more with this than with anything else I said BUT to make you feel better, I'm not going to break up. Your cliffhanger makes me curious to see where our relationship is headed next and I just won't quit you, I promise¹. Ttyl, Black Butler. Staying Detective Conan-esque will make me very happy, so don't change for the next few volumes, OK?

¹Don't hold me to that promise, though. I might change my mind.

A dark and stormy night, a locked-room mystery, an opera singer named Irene and and writer named Arthur are just some of the teasers in this new story arc.

This felt slow to me compared to the last few volumes, and I probably should have taken a brief break between the last one and this one. It was also not as creepy and disturbing as the last story arc.

As in previous story arcs, characters that were only briefly seen or met at the end of the last volume bring about the inciting incident that starts this story arc.

The character development of the secondary characters in this volume felt weak. I'm used to the antagonists and secondary characters in this series having a stronger presence.

It appears that Yana Toboso is having a bit of fun with the Penny Dreadful form and I look forward to see what the author has in store for us with this very obvious Holmes-inspired story.

Oh, and I love the inverness cape and deerstalker that Ciel is donning on the inside cover flap.

    3 Stars.

This Murder arc is really interesting and I'm excited to find out how it all works out! *picks up volume 10 immediately*

  • Cate (The Professional Fangirl)

Definitely wordier than other volumes but I liked this because this featured a direct anime translation. And it was featured in one of the seiyuu events:

  • Laura

I’m sorry but Sherlock Holmes arc is not my fave 🙃🙃
